Regular Septic Pumping Helps Protect Your System
Over time, sludge and scum build up inside a septic tank. If too much material is allowed to accumulate, the tank has less working capacity and solids may begin moving farther into the septic system.
For many homes, septic tanks are commonly pumped every three to five years, although the proper interval depends on tank size, household usage and how quickly solids accumulate.

What Happens During a Septic Tank Pump-Out?
A septic pump-out involves more than simply removing liquid from the tank.
Once the tank and access lids are located, the technician opens the tank and removes accumulated sewage, sludge and floating material. Depending on the system and the condition found, accessible components such as effluent filters may also require attention.
The pumping process can also reveal signs of other problems including unusually high water levels, damaged components, clogged filters, groundwater infiltration or evidence that the system is not draining properly.

Finding Your Septic Tank and Access Lids
Older septic systems often have access lids buried below finished grade. Knowing where the tank and lids are located can make pumping and future maintenance faster and easier.

If your lids are buried and need to be uncovered each time the tank is serviced, installing risers can provide permanent access at or near ground level.

Signs Your Septic System May Need Attention
Common warning signs can include:
- Slow drains or toilets throughout the home
- Gurgling or bubbling drains
- Sewage odours
- Wet or spongy areas around the tank or leaching bed
- Unusually green grass over part of the septic system
- A high-water or treatment-system alarm
- Wastewater surfacing outside
- Sewage backing up into the home
These symptoms do not always mean that pumping alone will solve the problem. They may indicate that the system requires further inspection or repair.

Septic Alarms and High-Water Conditions
If your septic system has a high-water alarm, pumping the tank may provide temporary relief, but it may not correct the underlying problem.
Pump failures, float problems, electrical issues, excessive water use, groundwater infiltration or other system malfunctions can also cause an alarm.
